52. Triangulation Instrument

Signed: Iost Bürgi F

  Fig. 70

c. 1600

A gilt brass triangulation instrument by the maker to whom the design is ascribed by Bramer. The instrument coincides with that illustrated in catalogue no. 51, having one fixed and one sliding pivot, and each of the three arms engraved with a linear scale. As if to reinforce the gunnery applications, the reverse side of one arm has scales relating the size of shot to weight for three materials, marked in German, 'BLEI', 'GROSSEN EISEN' and 'STEIN' (see catalogue no. 4). The sights are in steel and the whole is very finely made, though without decoration.

Length (baseline arm): 324 mm
