Unlike German examples of combined levels and sights (such as catalogue nos 24 and 30), the offset levelling arc of this French instrument uses a solid sector of metal. However, it is otherwise similar in form, with a single sight sliding against a scale graduated 5-45 and the plummet moving over a 45° scale. There are two additional sights, one fixed at the foot of the sighting upright, and the other at the end of the levelling arc. In addition to the maker's inscription, the reverse of the instrument also has the engraved name of 'J. WEILER', perhaps an owner of the late 19th or early 20th century.
