22. Gunner's Level and Sight

Instruments such as Zorn's, which combine a level and sight, often have the inconvenience that the plummet obscures the sighting holes when the instrument is level. In this anonymous example, the problem is overcome by suspending the sight holder freely and dispensing with a separate plummet. The pointer at the end of the sight holder moves over an arc of slightly more than 60° whose scale of equal parts runs 24-0-24. The divisions of the sight scale correspond to Nuremberg inches, and are subdivided to eighths with the half-inch points marked. Unlike many levels, the arc simply screws into the arched foot rather than being formed from a solid piece of brass. The instrument would once have been surmounted by a ring, as in the level and sight by Georg Zorn (catalogue no. 21).
