It was clearly considered important for a gentleman to know the proper terminology of fortification. In this mathematical compendium components are carefully named, and equivalents given in Latin, French and German. Such terminological emphasis adds to the impression given by the geometrical formalism, to suggest that increasingly fortification could be presented as much as a polite science as a practical one.
