An instrument of this type is shown by Bion mounted for levelling a gun. A plumb line is attached at the hinge and reads against a scale on the cross-piece. Although identical in form to the Bion instrument, this example by Le Maire fils has only a single line on the cross-piece to indicate when a horizontal level has been achieved. It also diverges from Bion in the scales engraved on the legs. Bion describes an instrument solely for gunnery which carries scales for the diameter of shot and the calibre of guns. Le Maire has included not only these scales but also more general-purpose sectoral scales of chords, solids, metals, equal parts, planes, and polygons.
