Quadrant
Signed by Charles Whitwell
Dated 1595; English
Brass; 176 mm x 176 mm

The instrument, which is square in shape, bears a shadow square on two adjacent sides. This was used for both surveying and stellar measurements. Pivoted at the opposite corner is an alidade with sights. A horary quadrant, with straight lines rather than the more frequent curves, is on the same face. The limb of the horary quadrant is marked with a degree scale. On the back are a zodiacal calendar and wind rose.

The quadrant was made by Charles Whitwell, who made many of the instruments designed by Robert Dudley.
