Quadrant
Attributed to Josua Habermel
After 1582; German
Gilt copper; 150 mm in radius

This is a small quadrant, contained in a case. The limb is doubly graduated, for the measurement of heights and distances. On the front, two open dividers are engraved. There is a pair of fixed sights, and another pair on the mobile pointer, with a steel spring serving as a guide. On the back is a table for calculating the date of Easter, with the inscription 'iuxta Kalendarii reformationem, i.e. 'in accordance with the reform of the calendar', which implies that the instrument was constructed after 1582.

The instrument is unsigned, but the manner in which it is made, the types of engravings and its accuracy allow it to be attributed to Josua Habermel.
