Mining Instruments
Unsigned
16th century; German
Wood and brass; 270 mm in width

This set of mining instrument consists of plumb-lines and magnetic needles, a clinometer with a compass either side and small weights, feet to serve as stands, and bases.

The science of mining, which had its origins in the 16th century, led immediately to the development of new, finely engraved, collectable instruments, which, in this case, Mattias de' Medici procured for the Florentine collection.
