Diptych Dial
Unsigned
Dated 1539; Nuremberg
Ivory and gilt brass; 93 x 111 x 12 mm

This early dial has a nocturnal on the outer side of the upper leaf, a folding brass gnomon for an equatorial dial, combined with a lunar volvelle in the inner side of the lower leaf.

The compass card is finely painted in red, blue and gold and the dial appears to be dated 1529, corrected to 1539.
