Crucifix Dial
Unsigned
Dated 1575; Rome
Gilt brass; 11 x 54 x 31 mm

One of the outer sides of the cross has an illustration of the Crucifixion and the other has a table of latitude for 40 places. On the arms of the cross are the hour lines.

Inside the instrument is a compass and a small compartment with a sliding lid, probably intended to be used as a reliquary. The instrument is adjustable for use in latitudes from 0 to 90?.
