Altdorf is a small town some 25 km east of Nuremberg. It appears in a signature on an astrolabe by Johann Praetorius, the German astronomer and mathematician, who was Professor of Mathematics at Altdorf at the date, 1591, of the instrument in question. There is no other evidence of instrument making there.
