Horizontal Dial
Attributed to Carlo Plato
Dated 1585; Rome
Gilt brass; 90 mm in diameter

This dial is a very typical example of the work of Carlo Plato, an Italian maker working in Rome.

A peculiar feature of his horizontal dials is a pivoted compass, which can be used for both sides of the dial. The dial itself marks Babylonian hours and unequal hours on one side, and Italian hours and common hours on the other.

Common to Plato's instruments is also the naming of the winds and cardinal points in Latin on one side and in Italian on the other.
