Provenance
It was presented to the Bodleian Library
in 1636 by William Laud (1573-1645), Archbishop of Canterbury
and Chancellor of Oxford University, whose arms impaled by
those of Canterbury are engraved on it. It is believed to
have been given to Laud by John Selden, whose own astrolabe
is also in the collection (inventory no. 37527), as is Laud's
other astrolabe which he gave to St John's College (inventory
      no. 38642).
