The faces are one
third of each sign, i.e., 10° of the zodiacal circle,
beginning with the first point of Aries and
continuing to the last point of Pisces. Each
of the 36 resulting faces was said to be governed by a
one of the five planets or
either of the luminaries.
Al-Bīrūnī, in
his The Book of Instruction in the Elements of
the Art of Astrology, provides an early
codification of this scheme, identifying the lord of
each face. On Islamic astrolabes, the list of faces is
often labeled الوجوه (al- wujūh) and indicates the
lords by the last letter of the governing planet or
luminary. The
lords of the faces are given in the table below.
