Portrait of Tycho by the Flemish engraver Jacob de Gheÿn (1565-1629). The portrait is dated 1586 and the inscription reads: 'Likeness of Tycho Brahe, son of Otto the Dane, Lord of Kundstrup, founder of the Castle of Uraniborg on the Island of Hven in the Danish Hellespont, and inventor and builder of the astronomical instruments used there.' Along with a companion engraving by Gheÿn (see Image 41), it formed the prototype for many subsequent likenesses.
