The majority of experiments undertaken between 1896 through to 1901 used this type of apparatus to generate a spark (electro -magnetic waves). The 10 inch induction coil would have been used for example, as the transmitter for the transmissions between the Royal Needles Hotel and tugs at sea in the Solent, the transmissions between Osbourne House and the Royal Yacht and the demonstration at Toynbee Hall.
