This is a classic Type R valve, probably of WW1 vintage. The cylindrical anode is threaded by a helical grid and within that passes the single strand of Tungsten wire as the filament. In use, the filament would burn brightly, just like a light bulb. It must be noted that Fama mostly manufactured their valves in Holland and then imported them to Britain.
