On 18th January 1903 Marconi arrived at Cape Cod with a message that he had intended to transmit to Glace Bay and then on to Poldhu. However, it so happened that the conditions were so good on that particular night that the transmission intended for Glace Bay was picked up directy by Poldhu, thus making history as the first wireless message received in England direct from the U.S.A.

The historic message was from Theordore Roosevelt, President of the United States to Edward VII and read as follows:

'In taking advantage of the wonderful triumph of scientific research and ingenuity which has been achieved in perfecting the system of wireless telegraphy, I extend on behalf of the American People most cordial greetings and good wishes to you and the people of the British Empire.'

The reply from King Edward VII was:

'I thank you most sincerely for the kind message which I have just received from you through Signor Marconi's transatlantic wireless telegraphy. I sincerely reciprocate in the name of the people of the British Empire the cordial greetings and friendly sentiment expressed by you on behalf of the American nation and I heartily wish you and your country every possible prosperity.'
