In 1899 Lord Kelvin, William Thomson, founded Kelvin & James White Ltd, partially named after his late friend and optical instrument-maker, James White. After Kelvin's death in 1907, it underwent a number of name changes until 1913 when it became known as Kelvin Bottomley & Baird Ltd. Many years later the operation was merged with Henry Hughes & Son of London, England with the surviving company known as Kelvin-Hughes, Ltd.
