Text:

In 1936, Marconi-Ecko Instruments Ltd was founded jointly by the Marconi Company and E.K. Cole Ltd to make an increasing amount of test equipment, especially for military usage. This was in advance of WW2, which was looking increasingly likely. In 1941, the Marconi Company bought out Cole and the company was renamed Marconi Instruments Ltd, based at St. Albans and High Wycome. In August 1946, English Electric acquired Marconi Instruments Ltd, Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Co. Ltd., and nearly half of Marconi International Marine Communication Co. Ltd. In 1947, the factory and personnel of Marconi Instruments Ltd were moved entirely to St. Albans. In 1968, English Electric, including the Marconi Company, was taken over by the General Electric Company (GEC).

An associated note from K.C. Gledhill states: "SET OF INDUCTORS TM 4520

In August of this year [2000], Colehill Drama Group, whose home is the Town Hall in Coleshill High Street, organised a clear-out of a loft adjoining the stage in the Town Hall. The contents of the loft had not been sorted within the memory of any of the current members of the Group. The set of inductors were found at the back of the loft amd no one had any ideas what they might be for.

The Inductors were saved from the rubbish skip by my wife who admired their case and thoughit it would make a good toolbox. However when she bought the box hhome, we felt that they might have some historical value and hence we contacted Marconi.

We should like to think that they might make up part of your archive collection, but we are also extremely curious to know what purpose they were used. As they were found among the Daram Group's props, we wondered if they might have any connection with stage lighting. If, sometime, it would be possible for you to explain the Inductors' use, we should appreciate it very much.

K C Gledhill".
