Provenance
The Museum bought it with grants from the
Fund for the Preservation of Scientific and Technical
Material and from an anonymous benefactor. It was in one of
the auction sales (14 April 1988, lot 149) of items from the
Time Museum, Rockford, Illinois (their inventory no. 1056).
The Time Museum's founder Seth Atwood (??) had bought it from
Alain Brieux, a Paris dealer and collector. It was originally
made for use at Jaipur, where the maharajah Jai Singh II had
established an observatory in the early 18th century.
