Astrolabe Catalogue

Date ca. 1570
Maker Egnazio Danti
Place Florence
Material Gilt brass
Acquisition Presented by Lewis Evans in 1924
Accession 1924-0/2072

Provenance

Evans bought it at the auction sale of the Roussel collection in Paris on 13 March 1911 (lot 70). Danti, author of the first Italian-language book on the astrolabe (1569), either made or supervised the making of this astrolabe for himself; his name appears around a coat of arms, presumably his own (though it has not been positively identified).
