In 1533 a new book appeared on European markets. This new edition of Petrus Apianus' Cosmographia, edited and enlarged by the mathematical instrument maker Gemma Frisius, saw instant and lasting commercial success. Although neither particularly innovative in its mathematics nor elegant in its construction, Cosmographia was published in dozens of editions throughout the 16th century and was one of the most popular books of its day.
