Albert Chevalier Taylor (1862-1928) was born in Essex, and trained at the Slade School. After his education, he based in Newlyn as a one of "Newlyn Artists" until 1895 when he moved to London and gained popularity. In 1910, Taylor became a full Member of the Royal Academy exhibiting 49 paintings at the Academy. In 1992, this portrait of Marconi was commissioned for the Illustrated London News. By that time Taylor was already one of the most celebrated artists of the time. He must have produced this portrait at his studio in North London.

Text:
This portrait has a classical composition of a three-quarter angle. It also has a dark background that illuminates the sitter. The sitter wears a dark and formal dress. The sitter poses still with his eyes engaged with the viewers. The frame is elaborately decorated and painted in gold. These are the characteristics that have been often used for portraits of enlightened men in history. Therefore, it is possible that this portrait tries to depict Marconi as an enlightened scientist rather than as a commercial inventor.
