Document Heading: Historical Background

Text:

It was a direction finder of this type, together with an AD6 D Receiver (probably Inv. Num. 94461) that was used by Captain Courtney during his ill-fated transatlantic flight in 1928. It is known that Courtney's instrument had an inscription in the bottom left hand corner. The apparatus appears to have had some markings removed in this position, and the survival of this and an AD6D suggest that they are the ones used by Courtney. There is archive material that relates that Coutney's radio engineer was in possession of both sets after the flight and the Marconi Company wished to re-acquire them.
