In 1900 W Duddell found that continuous wave type oscillations were capable of being generated by an arc and subsequently various people experimented with radiating telephony transmissions by this method. In 1906 Captain H J Round of the Marconi Company started experimenting in this field and by 1908 was able to send intelligible speech over a distance that could exceed fifty miles. By 1910 he had designed this telephone arc transmitter.
