Document Heading: Historical Background - Lend Lease Agreement

Text:

This tube was produced as part of the Lend-Lease agreement between the USA and Great Britain. This program began in 1941 and continued throughout WWII. It was a program that allowed the United States to provide the Allied Powers with war material without becoming directly involved in the war, and was officially implemented by the Lend-Lease Act of March 1941. However, an important part of this agreement was repayment and Britain's debt was over £1 billion (£1,075 million). The final payment owed by Britain at the end of 2006 was to the amount of $83.3 million (£42.5 million) and was made on 29 December 2006, the last working day of the year. After this final payment Britain's Economic Secretary, Ed Balls, formally thanked the US for its wartime support.
