This particular receiver can be accurately dated to 1923. The BBC Logo ("TYPE APPROVED BY POST MASTER GENERAL") was used from 1st November 1922 until September 1924, and is a good indication of the date of origin. Furthermore, this is signed Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Co. Ltd. rather than Marconiphone. Therefore it was made after the Marconiphone 'department' was created in early 1923 but before it became a subsidiary company in December 1923. This model was one of the first domestic wireless broadcast receivers. These sets were made by the Plessey Company of Ilford for the Marconi Company.

Text:

The Marconiphone two-receiver'>valve receiver type V2 was the first to be designed exclusively for broadcasting. It employed a highly sensitive circuit that under normal conditions of reception, and with a good aerial would give clear reception on headphones within a range of 100 miles from a station on wave-lengths up to 3200 metres by means of interchangeable range blocks. Loud speaker reception was possible by using an additional two-stage amplifier.

Text:

After World War I, the Marconi Company began producing non-industrial receivers, principally for the amateur market, at the Soho premises of The Marconi Scientific Instrument Company. In 1922, the Marconi Company formed the 'Marconiphone' department, to manufacture and sell domestic receiving equipment. This equipment complied with Post Office specifications and tests, and was therefore awarded the BBC authorisation stamp; initially sets were made at the Chelmsford Works. In December 1923, the 'Marconiphone' department was formed as a subsidiary of the Marconi Company. Some Marconiphone Company sets were made at the Sterling Telephone Company (STC) Works at Dagenham. However, design and research of these domestic receivers still continued at Chelmsford.
