An early Chinese armillary sphere photographed in the grounds of the Beijing Observatory in March 2008. This was displaced from the observatory tower in the 17th century by Ferdinand Verbiest's redevelopment. It demonstrates how closely the decoration of Verbiest's own new astronomical instruments followed long-established Chinese tradition.
