Diptych Dial
Signed by Hans Troschel
circa 1600; Nuremberg
Ivory and brass; 65 x 14 x 15 mm

This dial appears to have been an everyday instrument, with all the accessories for telling the time in the different systems of hours (Italian, Babylonian and common), a lunar volvelle for telling the time at night, and a table of epacts for finding the date of Easter.

The decoration is very simple and geometrical, and the inscription on the outer side of the upper leaf reads 'I show the way, go on securely'.
