Astrolabe
Workshop of Jean Fusoris
circa 1450; French
Brass; 331 mm in diameter

This astrolabe was made by an unknown French astrolabe maker who probably came from the school of the famous instrument maker Jean Fusoris (circa 1365-1436) from Paris.

A noteworthy feature of this astrolabe is the inclusion on the rete of some unusual stars such as those in the Belt of Orion and in the Plough (Ursa Major). According to the star names the latter constellation is pictured as a four-wheeled cart that is drawn by three horses.
