The fine quality of this dial suggests it was an expensive and valuable object.The instrument is slightly unusual in having eight brass plates in the spandrel spaces on the outer sides of the leaves. These function as feet on the base and would have added more value to the instrument, already high because of the quality of the ivory and the precision of the engraving.
While the dial was without doubt valuable, it is not perfect: the misspelling 'SEPTENERO' in the compass is particularly noticable.
