Diptych Dial
Attributed to Thomas Tucher
circa 1600; Nuremberg
Ivory and brass; 60 x 88 x 13 mm

In this dial the mark of Thomas Tucher with his initials is not punched on a leaf as usual, but is engraved on a brass plate on the right edge of the lower leaf.

As in many dials by Thomas Tucher and his son Joseph Tucher, the table of epacts is 'incorrect', i.e. starts with 17 / 7 and the terms 'Julian' and 'Gregorian' are reversed.

At the bottom of a pin gnomon dial in the inner part of the lower leaf, an inscription refers to 'small' and 'large' hours but it appears to be incorrect since both the systems of hours marked by the pin gnomon dial would be defined as 'large'.
