Diptych Dial
Unsigned
circa 1600; English
Ivory and brass; 62 x 84 x 18 mm

The ascription of an English origin to this dial makes it extremely rare among ivory diptych dials: only one other example is known. It is possible, however, that the dial was made in Nuremberg for the English market.

The horizontal string gnomon dial is fixed for 52 degrees, and the upper leaf has a printed and coloured map of England and Wales with the motto 'OF THESE THINGES FOLLOWINGE, THIS FAMOVSE ILE IS FVEL, MOVNTAYNES FOVNTAYNES BRIDGES CHVRCHES WOMEN & WOLL'.
