Quadrant
Unsigned
circa 1400; English
Copper; 79 mm in radius

The hour lines and graduations on this quadrant are now difficult to decipher. It is not clear whether this is due to corrosion over time or whether the instrument has always been incomplete, with the engraving only ever provided in sketched outline.

Although the quadrant is now useless as a scientific instrument, its age, condition and unusual coloration lend it a certain charm as an historic artefact from the medieval period.
