Diptych Dial
Signed by Hans Tucher
circa 1600; Nuremberg
Ivory and brass; 53 x 68 x 9 mm

This example of diptych dial is not completely made of ivory. The upper leaf of the oval-shaped instrument is in fact of gilt brass and the lower leaf is composed of three layers, the external ones in ivory and the central one in wood (probably ebony).

Together with the initials and mark of the maker is the mark 'n' for Nuremberg, which could be punched by a sworn master to certify the good quality of an instrument.
