Astronomical Compendium
Attributed to Hans Dorn
Dated 1481; Budapest
Gilt brass; 68 x 66 x 17 mm

One of the earliest surviving compendia, this instrument includes a zodiacal calendar, a lunar volvelle, a universal equinoctial sundial, a compass, a table of latitudes and an unfinished quadrant.

Although not signed it has been attributed to Hans Dorn, who worked in Buda from the late 1460s to the late 1480s. On the relief-engraved scrollwork around the sundial's hour ring is the pious inscription 'AVE MARIA 1481'.
