Ring Dial
Signed by Humfrey Cole
circa 1575; London
Gilt brass; 74 mm in diameter

This is the only surviving ring dial by the renowned English maker Humfrey Cole and is a particularly large and fine example of its type. It has not only the essential hour markings and calendar scales necessary to set it properly, but can be used in different latitudes and provides useful tables such as the dates of the sun's entry into the zodiacal signs, perpetual calendars, a list of latitudes of cities, a scale for the age of the moon and some astrological information.
