Astronomical Compendium
Signed by Sebastian Thibault Dreux
Dated to 1588; French
Brass; 73 x 59 x 11 mm closed

The compendium is in book-form, with a curved spine, and incorporates a universal equinoctial sundial, compass, quadrant and nocturnal.

Aside from the signature all of the text is in Portuguese, and the latitude tables are mostly for Portuguese possessions in Asia and Africa. Presumably the instrument was commissioned from the French maker by a Portuguese patron, perhaps one who sailed on or wished to commemorate the nation's conquests and trading voyages to the Indies.
