Diptych Dial

Ivory and brass; 62 x 84 x 18 mm

Both the outer sides of this dial are blank.

The inner side of the upper leaf has a painted map of England and Wales inscribed in a circle with the inscription 'OF THESE THINGES FOLLOWINGE, THIS FAMOVSE ILE IS FVEL, MOVNTAYNES FOVNTAYNES BRIDGES CHVRCHES WOMEN & WOLL'. There is also geometrical decoration and the number '52' indicating the latitude for which the string gnomon dial (string missing) has to be used.

The string gnomon dial is on the lower leaf and is numbered with hours from 4, V to XII to VII, 8 and has dots and stars for the half and quarter hours.

The compass has a wind rose with 32 directions of which north is indicated by a fleur-de-lis and east is indicated by a cross.
