Surveying Instrument

Gilt brass; 120 mm in length
These two small instruments are integrated with each other. The first is a heavy square, with a compass at its centre which has lost its needle. It is also provided with mobile pointers. Two graduated circles are engraved around the centre.The second instrument is a triangle which bears on one face the monogram of its maker 'C.T.', i.e. Christoph Trechsler. One arc is engraved with descending graduations, corresponding to a linear scale. Probably these both belonged to a single instrument brought from Germany by Prince Mattias de' Medici, of which only these two parts have survived.
