Compass
Signed by Christoph Trechsler
Dated 1584; German
Gilt brass; 38 mm in diameter

This small compass is signed with the initials of Christoph Trechsler, who spent most of his working life in Dresden.

The compass was presumably part of a larger instrument, possibly for surveying. Its most unusual feature is the scrollwork button at the side of the compass bowl. This is kept elevated by a spring blade and was perhaps initially some form of catch release relating to the (now lost) remainder of the instrument.
