Astrolabe
Signed by Eufrosino della Volpaia
Dated 1525; Florence
Brass; 180 mm in diameter

This Italian astrolabe is unusual in so far as it bears the wind names on the outside rim of the instrument and the magnitudes of the stars on the reverse of the rete.

The form of the stamp used for the numeral '3' is also very uncommon, looking as if two threes were stamped into each other, one the right way round, the other upside down.
