Diptych Dial
Signed by Paul Reinmann
Dated 1599; Nuremberg
Ivory and brass; 113 x 65 x 14 mm

This typical diptych dial by the renowned Nuremberg maker Paul Reinmann contains a lunar volvelle, a wind rose, a vertical and horizontal string gnomon dial, a compass, a vertical and a horizontal pin gnomon dial, an equatorial dial and a list of 40 European cities with their latitudes.

The superimposed Italian and Babylonia hour lines on the pin gnomon dial on the inner surface of the lower leaf form a very attractive pattern.
