Astronomical Ring Dial
Attributed to Johannes Motter
Mid 16th century; Louvain
Brass; 182 mm in diameter

Although unsigned, this astronomical ring dial has been attributed to Johannes Motter by comparison with a similar instrument signed by Motter now in Brussels. This example also closely matches another unsigned astronomical ring dial attributed to Motter in Florence (Epact 14378).

The attribution initially appears to contradict the date 1602 on the instrument, since Motter is thought to have been active in the 1550s. However, the numerals of the 1602 date are engraved in a style distinct from the rest of the instrument, and therefore may have been added by a later owner.
