Astrolabe
Unsigned
circa 1400; French
Brass; 112 mm in diameter

This astrolabe bears a close resemblance with another (Epact 99166) which was classified as Italian by Robert T. Gunther. In this instrument, however, the plate specially engraved for Paris could also suggest a French provenance or ownership.

The stars on the astrolabe are named in Lombardic script, and the star-pointers are of the form known as the 'wavy-flame' type.
