Accession Number: 1924-0/part
Brief Description: Octagonal base with decoratively engraved upper surface on which is a separate brass dial plate with Roman numerals IIII - XII - VIII and the inscription "Horicontali & Solis" [sic]. The lack of command of Latin is reinforced by the scale of the age of the moon which is labelled "├ćatis Luna". On a separately rotating ring within, which carries a small arrow pointer, is the scale of hours I - XII, I - XII. The arrow is fixed at VI rather than XII so the adjustment for time by the moon would have been incorrect. The sprung upright for the string gnomon retains both string and plummet, and has holes marked for latitudes 46, 48, 50, 52 and 54 (though only one hour scale and no means of inclination). Leather-covered case, with interior moulded to accept the three feet.
Provenance: Presented by Lewis Evans in 1924.
