Brief Description: Oil painting on canvas, which has been laid onto board, in a gilt frame and mount. Depicting a river scene with Folly Bridge in the background. In the foreground four figures are depicted in punt and a small sailing dinghy (?) is shown moored nearby. Possibly from an engraving by Edward Rooker after Michael Angelo Rooker (1743/6–1801) of the ‘North West View of Friar Bacon’s Study’, Oxford Almanack, 1780 (a wash drawing of the subject is in the Ashmolean Museum, attributed to Rooker and a pen and ink and watercolour on paper by JMW Turner also from the Rooker engraving is held by the Tate (Tate reference D00001Turner Bequest I A) The reverse of the painting is strapped at each corner. There are two copper alloy hook and eye fittings and a copper alloy hanging wire. 9 white metal pins keep the board inside the mount. 7 white metal pins keep the mount in place inside the main frame. The title is written on the reverse 'Old Folly Bridge' and dedicated 'To the Princioal of Brasenose College from Humphrey Ward Dec 1889'. The reverse of the board has writing in black and white chalk. Indentations in the wood left by previous fixings.

Provenance: Presented by A. E. Gunther Esq. with the assistance of the National Art Collection Fund in 1986. Previously lent by Dr R.T. Gunther as part of the Gunther Loan Collection.
