Brief Description: | A circular bronze medal. Obverse: Bust of Van Beneden Reverse: "VIRO DOCTISSIMO ET CELEBERRIMO P.J. VAN BENEDEN PER DECEM JAM LUSTRA IN UNIVERSITATE CATHOLICA LOVANIENSI PROFESSORI MDCCCXXXVI-MDCCCLXXXVI" The lid of the package that the medal was mailed in remains. It had a postage stamp from Belgium for 10 c. Pierre Joseph van Beneden (1809-1894) was a nauralist who founded in 1843 the first laboratory and aquarium for the study of marine life.
