Brief Description: | Carte de visite (albumen print mounted on card) of a native (Maori) chief of the Hauraki region, seated half length, turned slightly to right but looking front, in western clothing and with a walking cane in his right hand. The identifying inscriptions were written by the original owner K. Johnson, who gave the photograph to Jabez Inwards as a Christmas present in 1875. The subject is a portly black man of very dignified appearance. Hauraki is a coastal and island region around Hauraki Gulf in New Zealand's North Island, near Auckland, its native inhabitants being chiefly the tribes of the Marutuahu confederation. | ||||||||||
